Podcasts for Mograph Artists

Posted in Resources on 03/24/09

Podcasts can be a great way to keep learning while you’re doing other things. If you’re driving, working, or working out, you can still throw on a good ol’ podcast and pick up a new trick or two. Video podcasts can simply be a great resource for new inspiration and video tutorials. They come into your computer regularly and teach you something new that you might not have even been looking for. I’ve compiled a list of 10 great podcasts for motion graphics artists to listen to and watch.

1. Creative Cow After Effects Podcast

This one is the most popular I’m sure. We all know what a valuable resource Creative Cow can be and their podcast is a prime example of this. If you subscribe to one podcast on this list, let it be this one.

2. Creative Cow Photoshop for Video (HD)

Another great series from Creative Cow. This podcast is about creating graphics for Final Cut Pro, Avid, and/or Adobe Premier Pro in photoshop. It’s all about design techniques for video editors and motion graphics artists.

3. Macbreak Studio

Hosted by Alex Lindsay, from Pixel Corps and formerly ILM, Macbreak Studio brings you the ins-and-outs of Video production on the Mac. If you’re an Apple Motion user, this one is a great resource for you.

4. Inside the Black Box

This one is also hosted by Alex Lindsay. It’s centered around the visual effects world and gives some tips and techniques not always associated with just one application.

5. The VFX Show

Industry veterans gather to discuss the latest in the world of visual effects. This podcast features a roundtable discussion with industry veterans, who focus on a single video for each episode.

6. Red Giant TV Podcast

As the name would suggest, this podcast centers around Red Giant software. However, it’s still great. There are so many cool things you can do with Red Giant software and this podcast gives you a good taste. It covers lots of great video tutorials that generally use some Red Giant software in some way.

7. Motionographer

Ahh, Motionographer finally has a podcast. This one is new, at the time of this post there are only 3 episodes up on iTunes. The Motionographer podcast seems to use the interview format, with the team from Motionographer interviewing some of the top motion graphics artists in the world.

8. Motion Graphics with the State College Area HS Technology Educational Department

Simple video tutorials that are very clear and thorough. Covers virtually everything, including 3D studio Max, After Effects, Photoshop, and Flash. Don’t let the High School in the name fool you, these tutorials aren’t just intro primers to various pieces of software- there is some pretty good stuff in some of these.

9.Maxon Podcast

Like the Red Giant Podcast the Maxon Podcast focuses on a Maxon product. However, unlike the Red Giant Podcast the Maxon podcast focuses soley on Cinema 4D. It’s a video podcast that offers quick useful tips on Cinema 4D’s lesser known features. If you’re an avid C4D user, or even just starting out, I highly recommend checking this one out.

10. XPLSV.TV Podcast

XPLSV.tv is a “digital database and inspiration resource focused in motion graphics, animations, demoscene, vfx, live visuals, and any kind of cgi videos you can imagine” and their podcast is a select grouping of the best of the videos submitted to xpls.tv. Each episode is pure motion graphics- no narration or tutorials, just great inspirational pieces.
